The Satisfied Soul: Contentment and Joy

“If you’re satisfied, you’re contented, and you don’t need anything more.”

Main Idea:

  • A person who is ____________ is a person who knows ____________.
  • Am I a person who knows joy?

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.Philippians 4:4-5

  • True joy is rooted in a ____________ rather than a ____________.

Reasons why we can have joy:

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one canmeasure the depths of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28

Fix your eyes on Jesus…for the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at theright hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

“This joy is not a continuous smile but a satisfaction in what the Lord has done and in his presence with us.”NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible

  • Being joyful is ____________ rather than ____________.
  • It’s more about the posture of my heart than it is about my circumstances.

Christian joy is a mood independent of our immediate circumstances. If it were dependent on our surroundings, then, indeed, it would be as uncertain as an unprotected candle burning on a gusty night. One moment thecandle burns clear and steady, the next moment the blaze leaps to the very edge of the wick, and affords little orno light. But Christian joy has no relationship to the transient setting of the life, and therefore it is not the victimof the passing day. Jowett

“If the joy Jesus promises is real and you believe him, there’s no circumstance that can steal your thanksgiving.”Jon Bloom
