Good Friday-Jesus Was Forsaken For Us

April 7, 2023

Tonight’s main idea:

● Jesus was forsaken so that you would _______________ be forsaken.
          ○ Jesus was forsaken because _______________ forsook him.

At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”(which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” 36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. Mark 15:33-37

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30

We will never understand the light of Easter until we come to terms with the darkness of Good Friday.

“Good Friday is a somber day. It is a day that calls us into the suffering of the Lord of all creation. It is a reminder to not rush to quickly to the bright lights and celebration of Easter Sunday. It is good to linger at the cross before moving to the empty tomb. It is good to stay with this dying for a while.

”Tonight’s application:

● Where have I forsaken Jesus recently?

He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying,“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. Luke 22:19-20 NLT
